The Kennedy Space Center is not very far south and sometimes a shuttle launch can be actually seen from the beach. It is a good family day out and lots to see there.

The ideal time to run, in terms of the ocean and the sand, is at low tide. Avoid the hottest points of the day, as the heat from the sun reflected from the water can be very harsh. This also means that you can even go for a swim after your run which is a great way of finishing off.

If you keep to just above the shore line the surface will be firmer and therefore easier to run on. Never forget to protect your skin against the damaging rays of the sun, even if there is a light breeze, always wear sunscreen or body lotion liberally before taking a single step.

Make sure you have a supply of water, either carried on your person or stop at water fountains if they are around. Dehydration should be avoided at all costs so take a regular intake of liquid.

Where clothing is concerned layering is best, that way you can easily adjust your attire to suit weather conditions and you won’t get caught out too often.

If you are using beach training before a road race, like a marathon then you will require plenty of running on a harder surface as preparation. Your feet will never manage a hard road surface without adjustment, whether you run barefoot or not.

The pace too will be very different on the sand compared to running on roads and whilst you will have strengthened muscles, great care should still be taken as the strain on both ankles and knees could be pretty significant.

It is well worth making all the necessary allowances for running on the beach because away from the traffic and motor fumes, with the sea rolling towards the shore what better way to appreciate the luxury of one of nature’s greatest gifts.

The ocean in the southern part of Florida has much better visibility and is ideal for those budding underwater photographers looking to share what they find with the world.

There are numerous reefs and wreck sites providing endless possibilities.

For the more experienced diver Stuart will be the challenge you have been looking for and with fewer numbers of people in the water the massive lobsters and various species of fish will be quite literally all yours.

It is recommended that you should be accompanied by a local as with the low visibility and deep rock formations it is better to take precautions.

Further down in the Florida Keys diving is much more controlled, although it is still fascinating and very enjoyable for all. The stunning beauty means that you must not forget your underwater camera because you might just snap a Moray Eel, Caribbean Reef shark and a Goliath Grouper. With abundant marine life and plenty of wrecks you will be in your element.

If it is a challenge that is required Florida’s east coast has them in profusion, from bug snatching to fishing with spears and the Monster Hole to world war two freighters.

Ideally you need to be about fifteen miles from the shoreline. The greatest time to go is in the Summer months when you get anything between seventy five to a twenty five feet level of visibility.

There are three famous dives from Fort Pierce which are firstly Inlet Park with its massive range of ledges and formations of rocks. Then the first ever Underwater Archaeological Preserve in Florida, called Urca de Lima and finally a Civil War era paddle wheeler. Not only are they great places to observe the different species of fish but they also offer something for the keen diver.

Saint Augustine on the North East Coast is very popular with its spear fishing and artificial systems of reefs. After riding out from as much as twenty or as little as seven miles you will be able to dive at up to one hundred feet.

There are many Groupers and Trigger fish to be seen and you might even spot a Hogfish. Again the Summer is the time to come with visibility at about forty feet.

The further south you go the more frequent you will find beach dive sites like Vero Beach. You will discover corals, sponges and an array of tropical fish.

White sand beaches lend themselves to strolling the shoreline, a picnic beside the sea or simply beachcombing for shells.

The water is clear and warm and will gently cradle you as you paddle about in the ocean.

Siesta Public Beach

Lay your beach blanket down on pristine, white sand at the county’s most popular beach. The beach can get quite crowded on weekends where it is said that over 15,000 people bask in the warm sun.

There are a number of facilities such as lifeguards on duty year around, tennis and volleyball courts, bathroom facilities and a concession stand for when you crave a snack.

The picnic area is shaded by pine trees where you can have a cookout using one of the grills onsite while the children amuse themselves at the playground. You can walk to Siesta Village from the beach where you can shop and dine on island time.

Turtle Beach, Siesta Key

Turtle Beach can be found at the tip of southern Siesta Key. It is a serene beach where tourists flock to sunbath, read, swim and picnic. If you are looking to get away from the maddening crowds of the public beach, then Turtle Beach is an ideal choice.

Palmer Point Beach, Siesta Key

Palmer Point Beach starts at Siesta Key’s southern tip and ends at Casey Key’s north end. A portion of the beach was once home to the Mote Marine Laboratory but when the Midnight Pass closed in 1984 the beach area was extended.

Many tourists and locals alike head to Palmer Point Beach, but because of its length it allows beachgoers a feeling of isolation and privacy.

You’ll see many shore walkers strolling the shoreline from Turtle Beach and get the chance to see numerous vessels as it is a popular spot for boaters. You should take note that there are no public facilities nor any lifeguards on duty.

Florida’s Manatee County is also home to Longboat Key where access to beaches is limited. Greer Island can be reached by land or sea and is a quiet and private beach where you can enjoy some great shelling. Again, there are no lifeguards or public facilities.
