You might think your swimwear and sunglasses are the only holiday essentials you need. Whilst they are no doubt essential, maybe think a little past them. You want to enjoy your holiday. After all it’s a little time away from your normal life. From the stresses and strains of work. A chance to just relax in the sun. But, to really get the most out of it you need to look after yourself. There’s nothing worse than feeling ill on holiday.

Take a look at our holiday health essentials and make sure you pack them.

Sunburn

Being careful in the sun is a must. Make sure you pack a high factor sun cream for the first few days. Remember to ease yourself in to time in the sun. Hats are important as is a little time in the shade. If you have kids with you choose cream with a factor of at least SPF30 – 40.

If you find yourself suffering from sunburn use an aloe vera gel to soothe your skin.

Insect bites

Most of us suffer from insect bites whilst on holiday. The bites can often get red, sore and itchy. Make sure you pack an insect repellent with you and some cream to treat it in case you do get bitten.

Colds and flu

It sounds weird doesn’t it? Getting a cold on holiday. It’s always something we associate with cold weather, but in reality colds occur whenever exposed to germs. Often on holiday as we start to unwind and relax, it can creep up on you. Illness whilst abroad can be awful, so make sure you pack sufficient nasal decongestant and paracetamol.

Stomach upsets

This is the biggest problem for holidaymakers, with a high percentage of people suffering from stomach troubles when abroad. For the kids, make sure you have rehydration powders on hand, as well as some over the counter medicines for the adults.

Inoculations

It all depends on where you go, but if you’re heading a little further afield on holiday you may need a variety of inoculations. The best way to find out what you need (if any) is to pay a visit to the nurse at your GP surgery. They can advise you depending upon your travel plans and then provide you with a course of inoculations if need be.

While the world is filled with beautiful and amazing sights, there are also some pretty strange ones on display out there.

In fact, some of them look like they just don’t belong, such as upside down trees and other physics-defying objects.

While you’re not exactly traveling in the Twilight Zone, these are some of the oddest sites and sights that you may see on our wondrous planet.

1. New Zealand: The Moeraki Boulders

There are actually several odd sites in New Zealand, but the oddest is on the east side of the South Island near a small fishing village. When you reach Koekohe Beach, you’ll find that an endless pounding of waves are creating the Moeraki Boulders.

There are more than 50 of these huge round boulders that have reached the shore. They were formed over the past 4 million years with the biggest one being about 7 feet in diameter and 7 tons in weight.

2. Iceland: The Geothermal Regions

In Iceland, just under and sometimes over top of the land’s surface, there are geothermal forces which create some unique landscapes. You’ll find colorful sulfur ponds, steam vents, and boiling in these areas, all surrounded by magnificent volcanoes.

If you head to the northeastern part of the nation, near Lake Myvatn, you’ll get a good look at these steaming and boiling holes in the ground. In the southern part of Iceland, you’ll find several active geysers as well as the Blue Lagoon springs.

3. Turkey: Pamukkale

In Turkish, Pamukkale translates into cotton castle. It’s a white chalky creation that’s looks like snow, but it’s actually a hot spring area which has been formed by underground volcanic activity. It’s a popular World Heritage Site and is protected by the government so the area can return to a natural state. You can still enter the pools and enjoy the warm water.

4. Yemen: Socotra Island

Socotra is actually a small archipelago that sits in the Indian Ocean just off coast of Yemen. It’s quite a remote area and you can access the main island by plane or boat. Because of its location, the island is home to many unique plants. In fact, about a third of them can only be found on this island and nowhere ales on the globe.

It’s a UNESCO world natural heritage site and the most unique species is the Dragon Blood Tree. It features upturned branches that hold up an umbrella-shaped, green crown. You’ll also find the unique Cucumber Tree here.

5. California, USA: Racetrack Playa

This is a dry lake that sits next to the famous Death Valley. The intense heat dries and cracks the lakebed during the dry season. What you’ll notice here are the boulders that you’ll find. There are tracks along the dusty lakebed which indicates that the boulders have moved across the dry landscape even though some of them weigh as much as 700 lbs.

The boulders are known as sailing stones, but nobody’s witnessed one moving. It’s believed that when rain falls and softens the lakebed, the rocks are pushed by the area’s high winds. Others believe when the lakebed freezes the rocks slide across it from the winds.

Many people of all ages love the drama and thrills associated with rollercoaster rides. If you’re one of them and are looking for some of the best rides you can start with these 10.

1. New England, Massachusetts, USA – Bizarro, Six Flags

The Bizarro can be found at Six Flags in New England. This ride hits speeds of over 75 miles per hour and also features a good amount of free-falling time.

As a bonus, you’ll get some amazing views of the local countryside and the Connecticut River while enjoying the ride. Overall, the Bizarro is 208 feet in height with a 221-foot fall since it actually goes below ground surface into an underground tunnel.

2. New Jersey, USA – Kingda Ka, Six Flags Great Adventure

The Kingda Ka is known as the one of the world’s fastest and tallest rollercoasters. The ride starts out with a launch that reaches a speed of close to 130 miles per hour and reaches 456 feet up into the air. To make the ride more dramatic and thrilling is its 90-degree fall.

3. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Formula Rossa, Ferrari World

This fantastic ride can reach 100 miles per hour in just a couple of seconds and can reach a speed of close to 150 miles per hour, making it the fastest roller coaster in the world as of 2012. It climbs a height of 171 feet while it shoots from inside to outside of the theme park.

4. Alton Towers, England – The Nemesis

The Nemesis rollercoaster is the first inverted one in all of Europe. The seats resemble a ski lift and the ride twists and loops like crazy. It became famous back in 2004 when 32 naked people rode it to set an odd world record.

5. Pembrokeshire, Wales – Megafobia, Oakwood Coaster Country

This British wooden rollercoaster known as Megafobia has a twisted type of layout. It takes about two minutes to complete the ride which is 85 feet in height and just over 2,950 feet in length. It’s definitely one of Britain’s most popular rides.

6. Salou, Spain – Furius Baco, PortAventura

This rollercoaster is quite unique as the seats of the ride are actually on both sides of the track. This means you’re quite exposed during the ride and it definitely adds to the thrill. The ride averages approximately 85 miles per hour and is a Spanish favorite.

7. Nagashima, Japan –The Steel Dragon 2000, Nagashima Spa Land

Japan’s famous Steel Dragon 2000 reaches a speed of up to 95 miles per hour on a lift hill. It reaches a height of 318 feet up into the air and is 8,133 feet in length. It takes four minutes to complete the ride, making it one of the world’s longest rollercoaster trips.

8. Queensland, Australia – The Tower of Terror

This aptly named rollercoaster launches itself straight up in the air. Its track is designed in an L shape and it runs on high-tech synchronous motors. These allow it to reach a free-floating position before it goes backwards and retraces the route. The Tower of Terror can also hit a speed of 100 mile per hour.

9. Yamanashi, Japan – Eejanaika, Fuji-Q Highland Park

This rollercoaster features seats that can actually turn 360 degrees backwards and forwards while in a controlled spin. It’s the second rollercoaster of its type. Eejanaika can reach a speed of 78 miles per hour and reaches a height of 249 feet.

10. Toronto, Ontario, Canada – The Behemoth, Wonderland Park

This rollercoaster cost a staggering $26 million to build. It’s Canada’s fastest and tallest rollercoaster. It begins with an 85-degree climb and can hit a speed of 80 miles per hour in just under four seconds. The behemoth features eight different drops as well as double-banked horizontal loops.

If you’ve already enjoyed your honeymoon and would like to try somewhere different when celebrating one of your wedding anniversaries, these are 9 excellent destinations to choose from.

1. Paradise Island, Bahamas

This is such a warm and friendly place that you might even think about taking your children with you. There’s something here for people of all ages. The tropical beaches are tremendous and you’ll get a chance to swim with the playful dolphins. There are water slides and lagoons which are ideal for fun and snorkeling. You’ll also find a golf course and spa as well as the famous Bacardi rum distillery.

2. Chiang Mai, Thailand

This is one of the world’s best places for learning about other cultures. You’ll even be able to volunteer your time here while doing so. Chiang Mai provides a lot of opportunities for people to work and teach with local residents. For example, you can volunteer at an orphanage, help renovate buildings, teach English to Buddhist monks, and look after elephants. The food is fantastic, the people are charming, and the architecture is amazing.

3. Mombasa, Kenya

If you’re looking for something a bit different, you should consider a trip to Mombasa, which lies next to the Indian Ocean. Mombasa offers a wonderful combination of the sea and sand and historic and traditional African culture. Kenya has been ruled by the British, Arabs, and Portuguese over the years and they all left some wonderful influences on the city. If you’d like to take a walk on the wild side, there are numerous safaris to enjoy.

4. Queenstown, New Zealand

If you’re the adventurous type, you’ll enjoy a trip to Queensland. The landscapes are astounding and you’ll be able to enjoy a host of activities such as snowboarding, skiing, horseback riding, white-water rafting, and hiking. Queenstown is the home to the world’s original commercial bungee jump and a great place for daredevils.

5. The Dominican Republic

This wonderful Caribbean island offers a great deal for your money. The Dominican offers exceptional deals when it comes to all-inclusive resorts. The beaches and weather are fantastic, but there’s plenty to explore if you want to head into the picturesque villages and towns. The capital of Santo Domingo is a wonderful place to visit to see how the local residents enjoy themselves.

6. Positano, Italy

A trip here to the Amalfi Coast will offer some of Italy’s best food, wind, and scenery. Positano offers plenty of things to do and see. The surrounding countryside is spectacular, including the local beaches. The town reminds visitors of an old fishing village and one of the most popular sites is the Santa Maria Assunta church where you can look over numerous 13th-century artifacts.

7. Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

You know what you’re getting when you visit Las Vegas and there’s nothing wrong with that. Along with the casinos, shows, restaurants, and golf courses, you can enjoy day trips to the local countryside and desert as well as the Grand Canyon. You can always renew your vows here in Sin City in one of the themed wedding chapels, where you might be able to get married by an Elvis impersonator.

Paying with credit cards for a reservation is a major trend in lodging at the moment.

It is easier for the establishments that have a history to incorporate this new method into their services than in case of the new establishments.

This is because they have a higher risk associated. In order for a hotel to be able to accept credit cards for reservations there is a set of rules that need to be taken into consideration.

Guaranteed Reservations

The focus of these rules evolves around the program known as Guaranteed Reservation. The main point is that the room is paid for in advance. As a result there will be a hotel room available for the customer in question starting with the time of the check in and until checkout.

In case the customer cancels the reservation before 6 p.m. on the day of the arrival the hotel doesn’t have the right to charge any extra fees. In other cases there will be a charge equivalent to the price of a one night stay.

How to manage the payments?

The procedure of processing credit cards for motels starts with explaining to the customer the terms of the program. The customer must have information regarding the authorization check to make sure that there are sufficient funds on the card and he or she also has to find out about the cancellation fee.

After this the information of the customer is gathered and the reservation is confirmed. The customer must receive a confirmation number. If the reservation is made through the phone, the customer must receive an email containing all this information.

The customer has the right to cancel the reservation. If this is the case the request needs to be processed by the hotel and the customer must receive a cancellation number. If there is no cancellation, a registration card has to be prepared before the arrival of the customer that has a room number assigned to it.

Upon the arrival of the customer he or she must receive a room according to the reservation. If there are no vacant rooms, the customer must get a comparable room at another location for one night without any additional fees. Transportation should also be taken care of and the customer should be able to use the phone for at least three minutes. If there is no cancellation but the customer doesn’t arrive, the hotel can charge a no-show fee.

When it comes to tourism, the beautiful North African nation of Morocco has been in a bit of a slump recently. However, that’s all set to change in the near future.

The nation is expecting tourist dollars in 2012 to at least equal last year’s totals as it’s focusing on attracting visitors from the Middle East and Eastern European nations to make up for any drop in Western European tourism.

Morocco is depending on attracting more visitors since tourism is the country’s largest source of foreign currency. It’s also the second biggest employer in the land and contributes greatly to the gross domestic product (GDP). There are 400,000 tourism-related jobs in the country and the industry accounts for approximately 10% of Morocco’s GDP.

The nation’s tourism industry is hoping to strike a deal with one of the major airlines from the Gulf Arab region to help pick things up. But while the actual number of tourists may be in decline, the money they’re spending while on vacation in Morocco has remained at a level pace. In fact, the number of visitors and the time they spent in the country fell in 2011 when compared to 2010, but the amount of money they spent rose by 4%t.

The government feels 2012 will probably equal 2011 when it comes to tourist income or it might even rise a little bit more. A third of all visitors to Morocco come from Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, and the Benelux nations. It’s estimated that 70% of visitors explore the land independently instead of with tour companies and most of them prefer to lodge in five-star hotels.

In 2012, Morocco will be focusing its tourism promotions on countries such as Slovakia, Poland, Russia, and the Czech Republic. The Moroccan government says these Eastern European nations are emerging as prime tourist markets because the purchasing power is rising in them and more and more people from there are now traveling abroad when taking vacations.

Ever since 2010, the Morocco’s major airline, Royal Air Maroc, has added more direct routes and flights to Poland and Russia. The airline is now planning to add flights on a regular basis to Prague, Bratislava, St Petersburg, and Warsaw and hopes to do the same to the Scandinavian countries, as they used to be a big tourist market for Morocco and they hope to revive it.

Authorities are hoping to establish flights by one of the major Gulf Arab airlines that will see visitors land in cities such as Agadir and Marrakesh instead of just in Casablanca. The government is depending on striking a deal with another airline because Royal Air Maroc doesn’t have a big enough fleet of planes to handle it all alone.

It’s estimated that Morocco will be able to triple its tourism income by the year 2020 if a deal can be struck with one of these foreign airlines. The government is also confident that once tourists explore the fascinating attractions in Morocco there will be many repeat visitors.

The world is definitely an ever-evolving planet and that means we have to take the good with the bad.

Some top international cities have been given a bad rap over the years for various different reasons.

However, after exploring them you’ll soon realize that the good points certainly outweigh the bad. Here are 10 cities that deserve to be explored before coming to a decision on them.

1. Lahore, Pakistan

Some of the regions of Pakistan which border Afghanistan may have a bad reputation. However, there are plenty of safe and quiet areas for tourists. The nation’s second-largest city, Lahore, is certainly one of these communities. The city is home to numerous events and festivals each year including the Festival of Lamps. Lahore also features some spectacular architecture.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Las Vegas is known as Sin City for a reason. It’s home to nonstop gambling and drinking and features several erotic shows. However, it’s also an ideal family location as there are many other attractions to enjoy and numerous day trips to be made from there. There are plenty of golf courses, luxury resorts, excellent shops and restaurants and splendid performance arts shows.

3. Amsterdam, Holland

Amsterdam might have gained and lost a lot of visitors after it legalized the use of marijuana and prostitution, but this beautiful city has too many wonderful points to miss it. The architecture and canals are simply amazing and the art collection at the famous Van Gogh Museum shouldn’t be missed. There are also historical and emotional tours of the Anne Frank House.

4. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul may be a busy and bustling city with parts of it being quite crowded, but there are so many things to enjoy here. The capital of South Korea is a splendid location for shopping, viewing architecture, and visiting museums. The food and traditions are also exceptional.

5. Kingston, Jamaica

Kingston has been called a crime-ridden haven for drug gangs. But a trip here to Jamaica’s capital will allow you to enjoy fantastic food, friendly people, superb beaches and great sailing. It’s a perfect spot to soak in the big city life of Jamaica.

6. Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Toronto has been called a city full of rude and arrogant people, but it’s actually a melting pot of interesting cultures. Canada’s biggest city is filled with interesting neighborhoods, museums, and entertainment venues. It’s filled with excellent restaurants and shopping districts and is home to a vibrant nightlife.

7. Madrid, Spain

A lot of people have complained about pickpockets in this wonderful city. But if you just keep your eye on your belongings, you’ll enjoy this magnificent city. You’ll be able to take in the history, culture, traditions, food, nightlife, and architecture in one of the world’s greatest destinations.

8. New York City, New York, USA

New York City earned a bad reputation back in the 1970s as a dirty-crime ridden destination. However, you’d never know it after visiting there these days. It’s the most vibrant location in America and it overflows with fine cuisine, culture, history, arts, sports, entertainments, and multicultural festivals. It has to be seen to be believed.

9. Bogota, Colombia

Bogota was once known as one of the world’s top drug capitals. But the wonderful South American city has seen tourism pick up dramatically over the past several years. There are numerous recreational areas, parks, art galleries, and museums to enjoy along with an abundance of natural beauty in the surrounding area.

10. Jakarta, Indonesia

Terrorist bombings in 2003 and 2004 put a huge dent in the tourism industry here. But the city features world-class shopping, nightlife, and dining and is one of the top international business centers on the planet. It’s a cosmopolitan city with a lot to offer.

A visit to London is the trip of a lifetime for many people. With so much to see and do in England’s capital city metropolis you could spend weeks here and only brush the surface of what the city has to offer.

England, however, is so much more than just London and one shouldn’t be fooled into thinking they have experienced English life and culture without stepping foot outside of the city.

On your next trip to the UK why not leave the capital city behind and head to the North West of the country? There is so much to see and do, and it will save you a pretty penny too!

Lake District

The Lake District is the biggest and most visited national park in the UK, and with good reason. This is picture postcard England at its best, with sweeping green mountains dipping down into crystal clear lakes. This is the landscape that inspired writers such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, both of whom called the area home throughout their lives.

Set yourself up in a quaint holiday cottage in the Lake District and spend some time exploring this beautiful area, a favourite with the English and visitors alike.

Manchester

Manchester is the largest city in the North West of the country and is most famous for its musical pedigree. This is the city that gave birth to the Brit pop powerhouse Oasis in the 90s, but the cities musical heritage is much longer than that. With the popularity of bands such as the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays the popularity of the city boomed and was soon dubbed Madchester due to its wild nightlife.

Rock clubs and pubs still abound but there is more to Manchester then just the music. The city boasts two top Premier League football teams, Man U and Man City, and the city centre shopping is said to be the best in the region.

Liverpool

Liverpool is one of the largest cities in the UK and is famous for many things – namely its maritime history, football, and The Beatles. It also has a bit of a reputation for being a bit rough around the edges, but over the last decade a lot of effort has been put into shining the city up and making it a top tourist destination.

No trip to Liverpool would be complete without The Beatles, and you have no end of choices on how to commemorate the Fab Four in the city. The Beatles Experience in the Albert Dock area of the city is a museum dedicated to the life and times of the band and is filled to the brim with memorabilia.

The city is also filled with great museums, including Tate Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Chester

The Cathedral city of Chester is one of the best preserved historical cities in the country, and one of the most beautiful as well. Set along the banks of the River Dee in the county of Cheshire, there has been a settlement here since AD 79. The city still bears the marks of its Roman past, with the largest uncovered amphitheatre in England and the most complete Roman and medieval defensive town wall system in Britain.

You might come to Chester for the history, but you’ll stay for the charm! The city centre is filled with lovely shops and restaurants, and holds its own for a fun night out as well. Chester is also home to one of the most visited zoos in England, which boasts over 7000 animals, including elephants, lions, and a fruit bat experience like no other.

On your next trip to the UK make sure that you visit somewhere a little bit different and see another side to this fascinating country. The North West of England might not be at the top of every traveller’s itinerary today, but it will only be a matter of time until it is!

If you’re heading to the North West of the country on vacation and are looking for holiday accommodation then why not consider a holiday cottage? Self catering cottages are a comfortable and economical alternative to the traditional hotel and with so many different homes to choose from there is sure to be the perfect one out there for you. Visit www.sykescottages.co.uk for a full range of cottage located throughout the UK and Ireland.
