The annual Canadian Figure Skating Championships are quite popular with Canadians and the 2011 event will be held in Victoria, British Columbia from Jan 21st to 23rd at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. In addition, the Skate Canada Junior Nationals will be held a few days earlier from Jan. 17th to 20th.

The Skate Canada Junior Nationals feature about 180 figure skaters in a variety of disciplines, such as men’s, women’s, ice dance and pairs. They compete at the junior and novice levels during the Junior Nationals. The skaters competing for spots on the national team will then compete at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

The Canadian Figure Skating Championships feature about 90 competitors in men’s, women’s, ice dance and pairs categories in the senior level. These skaters are also competing for berths on the Skate Canada National Team as well as national teams which will skate at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships and the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships.

Amateur skating has been an organized sport in Canada since 1887 and these are two of the most prestigious events in the country.
