The Canadian twin cities of Kitchener/Waterloo, that are located in the province of Ontario, are two of the most visited in the country every October as they host the annual Oktoberfest Festival.

This is the largest beer, food, and culture festival in the world outside of Germany and it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the beer and food halls.

The city of Kitchener, was formerly called Berlin, and has a strong German influence. The festival also takes place during the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday and features a variety of cultural and sporting events as well as contests, parades, concerts, family events, and tapping of the first keg.

The fest halls get packed out for the 10 day event where visitors can enjoy their favourite drinks, German food, costume, and music.

If you need to take a break from the partying, the surrounding area has lots to offer as it’s in the heart of the local Mennonite community. Here you’ll see the Mennonites traveling the regional roads in their horse and buggies to and from their local markets.

There are several quaint local towns and villages in the area such as Elora, St. Jacobs, St. Clements, and Elmira, where you can buy some fine craftwork and upscale clothing.

The Kitchener/Waterloo area is located near the picturesque Grand River and is full of restaurants, pubs, clubs, and shops. The university city of Waterloo is regarded as one of the most technological in the world as it’s where the famous Blackberry communication device was founded.

The Kitchener/Waterloo Oktoberfest festival has been going strong for over 40 years now and runs from Oct. 8-16 in 2010. You can get detailed information at http://www.oktoberfest.ca.
