The Irish county of Tipperary has long been famous in song ever since World War 1 and it’s one of the country’s most beautiful and scenic regions. Some of the most picturesque lakeside villages include Dromineer, Terryglass, Ballina, and Garrykennedy. These places offer some excellent views and are ideal settings to relax and explore the wonderful Irish countryside.

Tipperary is well known for its archaeological sites and caves and you’ll also be able to enjoy activities such as golf, fishing, hiking, and mountain climbing. If you head over to the county capital of Nenagh, you can visit the War Museum, and learn the history of the Gaelic Games. Just a few miles from town you can visit the Cistercian Holy Cross Abbey.

If you head southward from Nenagh, you’ll come to the historic mining region known as Silvermines. This is home to the Slieve Felim mountain range and walking routes. There are about 20 miles of trails that spread across four counties and offer some exceptional scenery.

Another interesting town to visit is Cashel as it’s quite historic and is home to the Rock of Cashel which is lit up at night and is quite impressive indeed. It used to be the seat of Munster’s kings and has been a symbol of priestly and royal power for well over a thousand years. A 17th century archbishop known as Miler Magrath is buried on the rock.

If you’d just like to wander around the county you should head to the Glen of Aherlow where you can bike or hike to your heart’s content. Over the village of Roscrea you’ll be able to view the majestic Slieve Bloom Mountains as well as wooded glens, mountain streams, and open vistas. For fishing and boating, try Lough Derg which is located in the northeast of Tipperary.

If you’d like to see or climb some more mountains you should head south to take in the Galtee Mountains. The highest mountain in Ireland, Galtymore, which is just over 3,000 feet is in Tipperary.

For more history, it’s worth visiting Carrick-on-Suir. This is a lovely town that sits on the banks of the River Suir. This is home to an Elizabethan fortified mansion known as Carrick Castle and a 15th-century seven-arched bridge.

There are plenty of historical and interesting sites to see in Tipperary and the landscape is rich in natural beauty. It’s certainly worth visiting if you’re ever in Ireland.
