The weather in the UK is glorious right now. This heat wave just keeps on going. You´ve got your deck chairs out in the back garden, the BBQ´s on and you’re planning your next trip to the local beer garden. You´ve got a spring in your step and that friendly summer atmosphere is everywhere. However, as we all know from vast experience, it won´t last forever and the rain is sure to soon rear its head. If you are, in this case, looking to book a late get away, the Canary Island of Lanzarote could be the perfect choice; near guaranteed sun and warmth all summer long.

When I went away with my family last summer we stayed in the Barceló Lanzarote ResortHotel in the popular tourist area of Costa Teguise on the eastern side of the island. I can vouch that it comes recommended. The hotel really caters to families in terms of its facilities and range of activities.

For children, there are two suitable swimming pools complete with water slides. There is an outdoor play ground for the most active as well as an indoor soft play area for younger children. There are three kids clubs, which cater to the different age groups from three up to fifteen years and there is also a vast range of facilities provided, such as giant monopoly, a climbing wall, miniature golf and Scalextrics.

There were also plenty of facilities to suit all the family including an extensive range of modern sports facilities such as tennis and basketball courts, a beach volleyball court and an archery and rifle range. There is also a gym and daily aerobics and water polo sessions, aimed towards adults. And after all that mayhem and activity, the hotel also offers an adult health and beauty centre offering wellness and beauty treatments.

The four star hotel offers an all-inclusive service to its guests, which we decided to take up. Once you have your all-inclusive wristband or card you will be able to enjoy a buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner which has daily live show cooking as well as tea, coffee, cakes and ice cream, available throughout the day. All-inclusive guests also have access to the bars, can participate in all of the day-time activities and enjoy the full day/evening entertainment programme.

There are also many activities available outside of the hotel resort including Golf, scuba diving and wind surfing, which all can be booked through the entertainment team. Barceló Hotel also recommended a number of excursions in the area. Such as visiting La Cueva de los Verdes (green caves) in the north of Lanzarote. You can also visit the Wine Route in La Geria in the centre of the island in order to see the volcanic landscape or, alternatively, travel to the Timanfaya National Park in the west. The Rancho Texas theme park is a good day trip for all the family featuring sea lion performances and family rides.

In August, September or October, once the cloud cover returns to the UK, jet off to Lanzarote to prolong that summer feeling we like so much.
