While the Wild West may no longer exist in North America, there are still plenty of cowboys around and one of the best places to see them is at the famous Calgary Stampede in the Canadian province of Alberta from July 9-18, 2010.
The Stampede, which got its start way back in 1886, attracts over a million visitors a year from all over the world to the city of Calgary as it celebrates the cowboy way of life.
The 10-day event mixes Canadian heritage along with modern entertainment. The Stampede features a traditional cowboy rodeo that features a variety of popular events, such as bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, and tie-down roping. Other popular events include chuck wagon racing, which dates back to the days of old.
The rodeo is one of the most famous in the world and it attracts some of the best competitors on the planet, who are all vying to claim some of the million dollar prize money. Every night, the Stampede ends with a breath-taking fireworks display.
The city of Calgary is easy to get to as it has an international airport and is filled with first rate-hotels and restaurants that are suitable for all budgets.
