Papua New Guinea might not be a tourist hot spot, but it’s certainly one of the best places in the world to visit to view other cultures, natural beauty, and amazing wildlife and flora. However, from September 17 to 19, 2010, the country will attract quite a few visitors to its annual Goroka Show.
This is a popular cultural event and gathering of tribes that is held close to the country’s Independence Day of Sept. 16. The festival takes place in the town of Goroka and about 100 local tribes gather to show off their culture, dance, rituals, customs, and music etc.
The show’s roots can be traced back to 1957 and over the last few years it’s grown into an attractive and interesting tourist attraction as it allows visitors an excellent chance to see traditional tribal culture all in one place.
The first festival was organized by Australian patrol officers who proudly showcased the diverse cultures of the districts they lived in.
In the 1950s, the town of Goroka was a tiny outpost station. It’s now grown into an attractive and well organised town of 25,000 people that features many with modern facilities along with a wonderful relaxed atmosphere.
It’s one of the Highlands major commercial centres and offers fantastic weather all year round.
