Anyone who has ever watched the all time beloved musical The Sound of Music has likely been beguiled by the scenic splendor of those hills, the beautiful churches, the charming country side depicted there.

Most of us have probably wanted to get up and sing with Julie Andrews as the hills come alive with the sound of music; the visual vistas as unforgettable as the music in the 1965 film.

Whether you are someone who adores the film or whether you would simply like a lovely holiday, the Sound of Music Tour of Salzburg Austria, could be a treat.

One gets to see firsthand, the breathtaking scenery depicted in the film, the picturesque Lake District, the historical as well as the architectural landmarks of the film. Some highlights of the trip could be:

The Mirabelle Gardens: Remember Doe a deer, a female deer? A ditty that most of us grew up with even if we never saw the movie? It was filmed in and around the Mirabelle gardens with the statue of Pegasus and dating back to the 18th century.

The Leopoldskron Castle and Hellbrunn Castle: Parts of this castle were depicted in the scenes when the children fall into the lake when boating. Also the ballroom shown in the film is based on the Venetian room in the castle. The picturesque Leopoldskron Castle stands on the water front.

Hellbrunn Castle boasts a reconstruction of the glass pavilion that is featured in two of the loveliest songs of the film, I am Sixteen and the duet song sung by the Captain and Maria.

Nonnberg Abbey: How do you solve a problem like Maria, the unforgettable and endearing song sung by the nuns for novice Maria was filmed here. The real Captain Von Trapp and the real Maria were married here as well.

St.Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang: The beginning of the film depicts some beautiful scenery, which was filmed around these parts; at Lake Fuschl on the way to St. Gilgen and the lovely village in the Salzkammergut.

Wedding Church Mondsee: In the film, this is where the wedding between the protagonists took place; with the captain played by Christopher Plumber in his full military regalia and Julie Andrews the radiant bride in pristine white.

So for any film buff, this tour should be a part of any visit to any place in Austria or indeed any part of Europe!
