There are definitely some crazy festivals and events that take place around the world. One of the oddest, known as Tunarama, will be kicking into full gear down in Port Lincoln, Australia, between Jan. 21st and 26th.
The small seaside town doubles in population as it attracts 25,000 people to the annual free event that sees people tossing tuna fish as far as they can. The fish are frozen and weigh about 20 lbs. each. They have a rope tied to them and competitors spin them around above their heads before letting them go.
The tuna tossing usually takes place on the Saturday and Sunday and the rest of the event is filled with various types of parties, processions, fireworks displays, and competitions, such as tug-of-war, wheat-sheaf tossing, and slippery pole climbing. You’ll also be entertained by music competitions as well as fantastic wine and food.
The Tunarama Festival started in 1962 and is designed as a family event. It’s usually held during the Australia Day long weekend and it originated as a way to help promote the area’s tuna Industry. This will be the 50th edition of the festival and it’s known as South Australia’s longest-operating free festival.
