The world is full of some truly amazing and beautiful places with some of the smallest being among the best. As they say, good things come in small packages. And if thepackages are filled with sandy coastlines and surrounded by deep blue seas you’re in for a treat. These are some of the best islands on the planet to explore.

1. Zanzibar

This gem lies off coast of Tanzania. It’s a good-sized island with a rich history, including the shortest war in the world. It used to be the center of the slave and spice trades and was ruled by Sultans. Zanzibar offers travelers gorgeous beaches along with fruits and spices and a hint of African culture.

The towns’ streets are narrow and tell stories of centuries past. Beach lovers can enjoy the sandy beaches and frolic in warm waters of the Indian Ocean. There are plenty of hotels and resorts to choose from on this interesting and historical island.

2. Bali, Indonesia

This small island has a huge reputation for its beaches, beauty, atmosphere, and cultural festivals and ceremonies. Bali enjoyed a record number of visitors in 2008 and for good reason. The residents are friendly, the weather is terrific, and there’s over 4,000 years of history to explore.

It’s an exotic place filled with temples and interesting rituals. The beach at Sanur, which sits next to the capital city of Denpasar, is one of the most spectacular in the world.

3. El Nido

This is actually a chain of about 45 small islands that lie in northern Palawan, which is the largest province of the Philippines islands. You’ll find crystal-clear water here making it one of the best areas for diving on the globe.

El Nido is a virtual paradise, and quite an affordable one at that. You can kayak or boat over to your own island and spend the day soaking in all of the beauty.

4. New Caledonia

This island community sits in the Southwest Pacific and features palm trees, turquoise water, sandy, white beaches, and unbelievable riches of seafood. New Caledonia is a French territory and you’ll notice the influences of its European parent.

You’ll find freshly-baked baguettes along with excellent French wines. The tropical island views are breathtaking and the lifestyle is laid back and peaceful.

5. Bermuda

Bermuda has long been one of the world’s hotspots. The island is known for its history, beaches, and wealth. There are no taxes in this island paradise and that allows for some of the world’s highest national incomes. However, the cost of living reflects in it, but it’s still an affordable place to spend a wonder vacation golfing and scuba diving.

There are numerous pink-sand beaches and the fishing is out of the world. The restaurants and resorts are top-class and there’s plenty of charm and history in the small towns.

6. Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and is filled with striking beauty. There are mountains and canyons in the interior of the island and they’re surrounded by fluffy, sandy beaches and colourful waters.

It’s quieter than Maui, but just as historical and exciting. There is plenty to do and see with accommodations and restaurants to fit all budgets.

7. Santorini, Greece

This is probably the most well-known and beautiful Greek island of them all, and it has a lot of competition. The atmosphere is fantastic with narrow streets and blue-domed churches. You’ll smell a fine mixture of wine, lavender, mint, and olive oil in the air.

The wine is excellent and very affordable and there’s nothing like sipping it back while watching the sunset from Santorini. The winds are warm allowing you to explore the volcanic hills, and wonderful beaches, along with the island’s rich history and excellent cuisine.
