Oktoberfest is a traditional celebration in Munich. Although the majority of people think that it is all about beer, the truth is that there is a lot more to it. Just think about the giant pretzels, gingerbread necklaces, sing-alongs and chicken dances.
Beer Tents
One of the specific things about Oktoberfest is having beer tents. The most massive tent of them all is Hofbrau Festzelt while the largest is KafersWisenSchanke. This is known for the shows and for the fact that a lot of celebrities attend it. It is good to know that in the majority of the cases the tents are packed.
Outfits
The Oktoberfest is often known for the traditional Bavarian outfits that the people wear. Men usually wear lederhosen, leather suspenders and a drop-front flap. A Trachten hat, boots, long socks and a white shirt complete the look. Women wear a blouse, bodice, skirt, and apron.
Beer
Even though enjoy many things about Oktoberfest, for sure you would like to try some traditional German beer. There are six traditional breweries participating at the event: Paulaner, Hofbrau, Hacker Pschorr, Lowenbrau, Spaten, and Augustiner. Beer is usually served in one liter glasses, except for the Weissbier that is served in a half liter glass.
Bavarian Food
If you are planning on drinking, you also need some food. For local delicacies, you should visit the Armbrustschutzenzelt tent. Here you will find Hendl and Haxn. The Fischer Vroni tent comes with delicacies based on fish, like Steckerlfisch.
Desserts and Snacks
Most probably you want to make the best of the festival and for this you will have to try the Brezel. You will find gigantic, salty, and doughy versions. In case you would like to have something sweet, try the sugar-glazed almonds prepared in kettles and sold in paper cones.
Fun Fair
Starting with the 19th century the fair has become an important part of Oktoberfest. This comes with thrill rides, like log flumes, rollercoasters, and a Ferris Wheel. There are some other fun locations as well, such as the flea circus. For some relaxation, you can also take a look at the souvenir stands.
Chicken Dance
The Chicken dance is one of the few occasions when people put down their beer. Since it is really simple, foreigners enjoy dancing it as well. You just have to move your arms like the wings of a chicken and fool around.
