If you’re a working adult, taking out time to go on holiday is definitely going to be one of your annual priorities, not to mention the thing you look forward to the most. This would explain your rage and frustration when your holiday turns into a nightmare.

It’s extremely unfair when all those weeks of planning turn into an utter catastrophe. The fact is that there are too many variables to ensure a perfect holiday, but it stings the most when the incidents that happened were easily avoidable.

This article goes over some of the courses of action you can take if you’ve been burned on your holiday.

Claiming compensation

Filing holiday compensation claims may be your best option. This is for a number of reasons.

Before companies worldwide had to buckle up because of the recession, travel agents and hotels were quite generous in the way they redressed the complaints of customers. Travel agents would hand out free airline tickets and hotels would have offered you a few nights’ extra stay. Such rewards are rare today.

Now, the majority of travellers go with independent hotels that don’t belong to a travel agent chain, because they’re cheaper. Unfortunately, you’re less likely to get anything out of one of these independent hotels if something goes wrong.

Apart from expressing your dissatisfaction, there seems to be little point in complaining to them. This is why claiming holiday compensation is a better idea.

Evidence

It’s important to document all instances of your dissatisfaction during your trip, if you’re hoping to be successful with your claim. The more evidence you have, the better. It’s unlikely, for instance, that you’ll receive compensation if all you have is one photograph of a cockroach on your toilet seat.

What you need is a photo of just about everything – it won’t make for the best holiday photo album – but you’ll be glad you were that thorough later on. You should also try and get witness statements from other disgruntled travellers in your group.

The right to complain

You have every right to complain if you find that you’ve had to pay out-of-pocket expenses that should have been covered in your holiday package. You also have the right to complain if you’ve suffered a total loss of enjoyment.

After you’ve read the travel agents terms and conditions, approach them with your evidence. If this doesn’t work out, get in touch with a small claims court.
