pregnant travelBeing pregnant doesn’t mean the world stops, and you sit at home awaiting your new bundle.

Holidays will still happen and vacations should be taken.

After all, being pregnant can be very stressful, so you should take time to enjoy the moments you can get away.

However, there are certain things you should do to ensure you will be safe and healthy when traveling.

Consider the following tips if you are thinking of a getaway during pregnancy. [travel during pregnancy]

Consult With Your Physician

Only your doctor can tell you if it is safe to board a plane or cruise ship for a long period of time. Make sure you explain in detail what will be required of you physically and emotionally on any trip you will be taking.

Your doctor can then help you determine if the risks of the trip are OK to take. Certain conditions or complications could require that you are close to a doctor or hospital. You should also ask your doctor for a recommendation of a local doctor in the area you will be traveling too.

If a complication does arise it is better to have a doctor who knows something about your pregnancy to turn to. You might even have your medical records forwarded just in case.

Take Your Medications with You

If you are on a daily regimen of prescription medications you will want to make sure you take them along. If you will need refills during your trip make sure your doctor calls them into a pharmacy where you will be.

If you will be traveling by plane you may need to take a written prescription for proof the medication is yours when checking in. If you use herbal treatments you may need to repurchase them upon arrival, so you need to make sure they are available.

Don’t Overdo It

If you have never been hiking in your life, it may not be bet to start during your pregnancy. Certain activities should be completely avoided by pregnant women. Riding ATV’s, jet skis, or horses during pregnancy is usually discouraged.

However, you also need to take breaks from sitting during travel. If you will be sitting for long periods in the car or on the plane it is best to get up and walk around every two hours.

When traveling by car stop every two hours and spend fifteen minutes walking around. On a plane you can get up more often for shorter periods of time. This practice will eliminate the risk of blood clots forming or ankles swelling.

Traveling can be a lot of fun, even when you are pregnant. Make sure you plan a vacation that makes you feel comfortable not overworked or stressed. Consider things that make you feel physically better like spa treatments, rather than playing racquetball.

You might also consider putting off vacations to other countries during pregnancy unless you are comfortable with the medical facilities available. In any situation safety should be your first priority if you are traveling while you are pregnant.
