Let’s face it, Christmas time isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. Yes, many people love to celebrate at home with friends and family, but others would rather spend it elsewhere. If you’re looking for something a little different to do between Christmas and New Years, how about a trip down to Colombia in South America.

If you happen to be down there between Dec. 25th and Jan. 1st you can take in all the fun of the annual Cali Fair, which takes place in, you guessed it, the town of Cali, which is known as the salsa capital of Colombia. The festival is one of country’s most popular national fairs as it features a wide variety of entertaining events such as music concerts, parades, beauty pageants, and parties.

Many Latin-American town fairs are concentrated on agriculture and livestock, but not this one. The parades and parties resemble the carnival down in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. The event features a traditional parade along with numerous salsa acts. There’s also the popular beauty pageant, where Senorita Cali is crowned.

In addition, the Cali Fair will entertain you with a variety of arts and crafts exhibits, tango and salsa contests, and sports competitions, including bullfighting. It’s the most important cultural event on Colombia’s calendar and has been celebrated every year since 1957.
