The celebrating continues in Australia not long after New Year’s Day as the annual Sydney Festival kicks off on Jan 8th and runs until Jan 30th 2011. The festival is widely regarded as the top cultural event in the nation and it’s earned this reputation ever since it was launched back in 1976.

The three-week event gets the New Year off to an excellent start as it features a wide assortment of cultural and artistic events. In addition, the Australia Day celebrations take part in the middle of the festival as they take place throughout the country on Jan. 26th.

The Sydney Festival takes place in the height of the country’s summer and showcases some of the best entertainers in the world when it comes to dance, music, theater, visual arts, and family entertainment.

The first night of the festival kicks off with parties in the city’s streets and parks as well as the city center. There’s also a free concert at The Domain.

There are musical acts to please all tastes and this year’s line up is no exception as it features several acts at different musical venues. Some of the artists this year are Emmylou Harris, Arrested Development, Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet, Holly Miranda, Los Lobos, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
