The northern lights or Aurora Borealis are a spectacular light show created by Mother Nature visible only in a few regions of the world. This year, the winter months coincide with the “Solar Max”, providing great opportunity to witness this beautiful phenomenon.
When and Where?
The northern lights occur between September and April in the Auroral Oval, the regions above the sub-Arctic and Arctic region. They are best witnessed on cloudless nights far away from the artificial lights of human civilization. Between December and February the view is especially good, as the nights are longer and darker, although the spring and autumn months offer increased activity during a steadier weather. Some of the best sightings are in countries like Canada, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland and even Green land.
Special holiday tours with perfect itineraries are a favorite among people who want to see the Aurora. These may include escorted tours, coastal cruising, self-drives and independent touring to remote locations for perfect viewing.
Each of the northern light destinations offers unique and different experiences and can easily be a complete vacation.
Besides the northern lights, one can enjoy the geothermal wonders like volcanoes, lava fields and hot water springs along with glaciers and waterfalls. Iceland itineraries offer baths in the Blue Lagoon, Icelandic-horse riding, super-jeeps, orca spotting and other enticing stuff. A popular spot is the Ion Hotel at Nesjavllir. The hotel has unique glass walls and uses recycled wood.
Beautiful fishing villages and open skies welcome the visitors who wish to enjoy the Aurora in this scenic country. The Hurtigruten Coastal cruises and locations at North Cape and Tromso ensure beautiful sightings. The Lyngen Lodge, Djupvik, strategically located between a mountain and a fjord has a Norwegian tundra landscape where the guests can enjoy a dog sled ride. The hosts make certain that the guests are awake at appropriate times for the sightings.
