If you really want to get away from it all while you’re in America, but don’t want to leave the country, the ideal place to visit is Mackinac Island in the eastern state of Michigan.
This is a superb place to leave all your worries behind for a day trip or weekend and get back to simple living.
The first thing you’ll notice about the island is there are hardly any motorized vehicles on it as most of them are banned, so be prepared to do a little bit of walking to explore the three-mile long island.
You can also bike it and take a horse-drawn carriage. There also aren’t a lot of people around as the population of Mackinac is only about 500 full-time residents.
However, in the summer time, this will grow to a few thousands as people are looking for a bit of peace and quiet and things slow down again in the fall.
The hotel rates are also cheaper once the air gets cooler and the leaves change colour. A trip in late spring is also recommended as the island holds its annual Lilac Festival.
The island holds several cultural events throughout the year and showcases a nice variety of architectural styles, which includes the popular Victorian Grand Hotel.
Many of these visitors make the trek just to check out the fudge shops on Mackinac Island, but there’s plenty more to do to warrant a weekend stay as the whole island is a national historic landmark.
You can reach the island by ferry, private boat, and small airplane. In the winter, you might also get there by snowmobile.
