Croatia may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of the perfect beach vacation, but it should be. The small European country boasts some of the best beaches in the world, and it is a cheaper destination than Greece or Italy. You can live out your island fantasy on Hvar, explore the quaintness of Dubrovnik, Split, and other towns, and do so much more.

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, chances are you’re not going to stay in one place. The island of Hvar is a favorite among tourists, and all it takes is a ferry to get there.

Traveling In Croatia

Decide on dates

Sometimes, traveling with no discernible plan can be a great way to induce spontaneity. You land in a city and discover it on your own, without the biased recommendations from guidebooks. However, if you want to go on a trip that lets you see the best of a number of cities, you need a bit more advance planning.

Decide on how long you want to spend in each town or island. Take a look at what each has to offer and see what most appeals to you. If you would rather lie by the beach than walk around cities, you should make a decision that reflects that.

Once you know how long you want to spend in each place, find the best dates to do so according to your work schedule or itinerary. Having clear dates in mind will make booking a ferry easy. Look at the times available on the various ferries as well. If you want an extra day at your destination, you want to leave as early as possible.

Choose a ferry operator

Those of us who don’t live in coastal cities and don’t have islands just a short ride away are unfamiliar with the process of booking a ferry. In truth, it is similar to booking any type of intercity transport. Compare your options and book the one that you feel most comfortable with. They differ based on the speed at which they travel, the comfort, and the various promises they all make.

Reviews will tell you what other travelers have experienced, but an aggregated idea is better than focusing on one or two particular reviews. All ferry operators have trouble with delays and postponements. Ultimately, you’ll need to choose one which seems most reliable and which provides good customer service.

Consider your stomach

Even if you suffer from seasickness, you can take a ferry. Since you can be inside the whole time, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem. However, if you are particularly sensitive, you should consider the lesser of two evils. Ferries which go faster are more likely to give you problems, but will at least get there as quickly as possible. On the other hand, the slower ferries are unlikely to bother you, but if they do, you’re in for a longer ride.

In the end, this should not be too big a factor in your decision. You are probably not going to have a problem, and ferry rides between Split and Hvar are quite short in any case.

If you follow the above guidelines, booking the right ferry will be easy.
