Donegal County is situated on the north east tip of Ireland and is one of the country’s most scenic and interesting areas. It’s quite remote, but has several fantastic sandy beaches to offer travelers who love the sea, sand, and surfing. In fact, there are miles of coastline to explore and you’re never too far away from the sea.

The county has many interesting and charming towns to explore with restaurants and pubs to discover and sample. The town of Lifford is quite popular as it’s filled with attractive architecture and shops. The busy fishing port of Killybegs is also a treat with lots of interesting attractions. One of the most popular is the Triona Design Centre as it shows how Donegal tweed is made.

The town of Donegal offers visitors the chance to explore its numerous and it’s also home to a wonderful castle that was built back in 1474. If you’ like to stay active, there are quite a few golf courses to play 18 holes on. One of the best can be found at Murvagh. The course is quite challenging and sits close to the sea. It also offers some fantastic views of the Donegal hills.

One of the best ways to explore the county of Donegal is on foot. There are many marked paths you can hike down to check out the wonderful countryside. If you like wildlife, you can visit Glenveagh National Park as it is home to Europe’s biggest herd of deer.

The Inishowen area is north of Londonderry and is filled with numerous rocky shores and sandy beaches. The pretty towns of Ailigh and Grianan are nearby and well worth visiting. Other popular sites are the church of St Aengus and Glencolumbkille village.

The whole county is interesting and worth exploring and many sites have stories behind them. For instance, Malin Head is a famous spot for forecasting the weather and it’s the northernmost location in Ireland. You’ll find a huge stone here that has the word ‘Eire‘ carved into it. This was done during the Second World War so enemy bombers wouldn’t mistake the neutral region for British country of Northern Ireland.

In the north of Donegal County you’ll come across Fanad. This is a Gaeltacht and the primary language spoken here is the musical Gaelic one. The fishing port of Killybegs is Ireland’s busiest and the town is also famous for manufacturing carpets. The county of Donegal has plenty of things to see and do for travelers of all ages and interests.
