The world is filled with carnivals of all sorts each and every year. Some of them are annual events and others are just one-time events. These are some of the top global carnivals that take place each year:

1. Carnaval de Oruro, Bolivia
Bolivians celebrate the ancient Ito festival as well as their Andean roots and Catholic traditions, which were introduced to the country years ago by Spanish explorers. Dozens of performing groups take to the streets of Oruro and parade through them during the Carnaval.

2. Karneval, Germany
The Rhineland cities of Aachen and cologne celebrate every year for the nation’s Karneval. Most of the celebrations take place on Rose Monday, such as parades, floats, elaborate costumes, and street parties.

3. Mardi Gras, New Orleans
This annual event is one of the biggest in America and the world. You’ll find thousands of people wearing costumes and masks and enjoying colorful parades. Other traditions include eating pancakes and tossing beads as the carnival is related to Lent.

4. Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The first celebrations in Rio took place way back in the 1720s. The carnival is now one of the most popular on the planet as it features parades, music, dancing, and many other colorful and interesting events. This carnival is also held before Lent.

5. Caribbean Carnival, Caribbean Islands
Many of the Caribbean islands celebrate with their own versions of celebratory carnivals. The biggest ones take place in Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, and Barbados.  The celebrations include dancing, music, calypso bands and rum.

6. Rijeka Carnival, Croatia
This is one of the world’s oldest and largest carnivals as it usually attracts over 100,000 people. The celebrations feature many different events that take place in the country leading up to Ash Wednesday. These include a spectacular parade, a children’s carnival as well as a Governor’s Ball.
