The South African city of Johannesburg is home to one of the world’s most entertaining and educational zoos. The zoo opened for business in 1904 and lies in the picturesque Parkview suburb in the north of the city.

The Johannesburg Zoo features a wide variety of amazing wildlife and offers several different types of daily guided tours that allow visitors to see how the animals live and how the zoo operates behind the scenes.

The zoo allows city dwellers to get as close to nature as possible while living in the concrete jungle. There are a total of seven classes of animal life showcased here. These are mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, insects, arachnids, and amphibians. The total number of different species reaches into the hundreds.

The most popular animals include cheetahs, pumas, crocodiles, polar bears, seals, cobras, Siberian tigers, leopards, Orangutans, gorillas, giraffes, zebras, baboons, lions, and elephants. The zoo’s grounds are beautiful as they consist of gardens, flowers, trees and open spaces where you can enjoy an afternoon picnic.

You can watch animals such as vultures, polar bears, and chimpanzees enjoy their daily feedings. For children, there’s a farm yard where children are able to touch the friendly farm animals such as sheep and ponies. The Johannesburg Zoo is open daily between 8:30am and 5:30pm.
