Truly, the best holidays in Australia are to be had at the Gold Coast. If it’s definitely the surfing that’s taking you there, you might want to do a little research into which spots are best for surfing. This article features what we think are the top surf spots in the area.
Duranbah
D-Bah is located on the north side of Tweed River. This is one of the main surf points on the Gold Coast, highly popular with both locals and tourists. Expect powerful wedging peaks and good tube time. The crowds are particularly intense during the Pacific doldrums, which give this area very good A-frame wedges.
If you’re visiting, you may want to consider other beaches first, as the local surf crews mostly dominate this one.
Currumbin Alley
This surf spot is ideal for novices and beginners. It’s also the location of the Currumbin Alley Surf School. Popular with long board surfers, it boasts perfect conditions for first-time surfers. Expect astonishing right-handers and all-round fun from experienced old-school surfers and newcomers.
Burleigh Heads
Renowned for its surf break, this is where you and yours should head if you’re tired of all the tourist crowds at the other surf points. If you get tired of surfing here, there’s plenty to do in the area, including loads of barbeques and cricket – if the weather’s good!
Expect right-hand barrelling breaks, set against the stunning backdrop of Burleigh Head National Park.
The Spit
Southport Spit, also known as The Spit, is situated opposite Southport, to the north of Main Beach. In terms of a place to pitch up for surfing, there are plenty of other attractions around for when you’re not hitting the waves.
There’s a Sea World Park, Palazzo Versace and the Gold Coast Sand Pumping Jetty. The Spit is great because it’s very accessible, and gets some great swells: it’s definitely one of the best surf spots on the northern part of the Gold Coast.
Kirra
The beachside suburb of Kirra is a friendly, great little place to visit for the surf. Although initially loved for its high-quality barrels, the sand that pumps across the Tweed River mouth has changed things slightly.
If the conditions are right, you can still catch some serious surf here. Watch out for the manta rays!
