Kilkenny used to be the medieval capital of Ireland and is also referred to as the Marble City. One of the main attractions is Kilkenny Castle as this fully restored structure dominates the town. It was originally erected in the 12th century and was rebuilt later on into a stately home in Victorian times. The ButlerArt Gallery is also housed there.

Dunmore Cave, Canices Cathedral, and Rothe House are also well worth visiting as are Kells Priory and Jerpoint Abbey. The local countryside is an excellent place to explore as there are several picturesque villages and small farms. One of these is the Nore Valley Park, which allows visitors to witness a working rural farm.

If you like local arts and crafts you’ll find some excellent studio workshops in the River Nore Valley close to the town of Bennettsbridge.  You’ll also find plenty of hills to climb, such as the Sieveardagh Hills, the Booley Hills, and Brandon Hill. These are wonderful areas to explore while hiking.
